Songs In The Key Of X
« on: December 15, 2011, 11:20:11 PM »

Greetings, everyone.  I've just discovered this forum, and have been making my way through checking out some of your music.  There's some good stuff here - I thought I'd throw my work into the mix and see what people's opinions are.

I just spent the last six months writing and recording a microtonal (and non-tonal) ambient album, entitled Songs In The Key Of X.  It's completely guitar: no MIDI, no synths, no keys, no drums, no vocals - just microtonal guitars, non-tonal guitars, and the rare fretless bass.  You can listen to it in it's entirety, or purchase it for $5 here:  http://benjaminstrange.com/songsx.html

I'd really like to hear what my fellow microtonal musicians think of it.  Your comments and criticisms would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi - what is a non-tonal guitar?

Well, I guess that's a bit of a misnomer.  One of the guitars I used for this project doesn't have any division of the octave: the frets are equidistant, one inch apart.  Every interval all up and down the neck is different from every other.

Oh, well then I think that is some subharmonic series tuning.

BTW - I bought it. You have an awesome ability to go from outrageously out of tune (by any standard!) micro-tonality turn it into pure power. I love it!

You got vision.

Admittedly, my knowledge of microtonality is not that deep, so I just refer to it as non-tonal.  Perhaps there's some more technically correct term for an equidistant fret system, but I have no idea what it is.  Actually, the guitar was inspired by Hedwig and the Angry Inch: the guitar is a pink Playboy guitar, which I found to be so perverse I just had to make it even more so.

I'm glad you're digging the music.  Thanks for your support!
