Ozone Layer in Quarter Comma Meantone (12)
« on: June 06, 2012, 12:18:43 PM »

A little something in quarter comma meantone (12). I originally composed most of this in 12ed2 before I had any guitars fretted for anything else. Do you think the chords that include augmented triads still work?

If not, what would be a better tuning for the piece other than 12 ed2?

Yeah the augmented triads would still work and be more interesting, since the major thirds in them will be different sizes and the entire chord will be tuned slightly differently depending on which of the 12 notes it is built on.

TL/DR: The augmented triads would actually be 'better' in meantone.

I'm glad you're still making music, I always have to smile when I watch your videos, and listen to your music! :)

You bet, they work excellently in a tuning like 1/4 comma mt, with its just major thirds - much better than in 12-ed2! ^^

In 12-ed2, an augmented triad consists of 3 major thirds 5:4 which are off by 13.7 cents, and the "augmented fifth" doesn't really sound like one, just like a minor sixth 8:5 which is also off by 13.7 cents.

In 1/4 comma mt, the augmented triad consists of 2 justly tuned major thirds 5:4, and a diminished fourth, which can be seen as a septimal (super-)major third 9:7 that is off by 7.7 cents. The augmented fifth 25:16 really "feels" like an augmented fifth with its small size of 762.6 cents.
(alternatively, the #5 can be seen as a septimal (sub-)minor sixth 14/9 that is off by 7.7 cents)
